Cloud of Witnesses

I love reading the lives of the saints. Recently I finished a biography of Blessed Solanus Casey, the humble Franciscan friar who served as porter and became known for his quiet miracles and deep compassion. Now I’m reading about Fr. Stanley Rother, the priest from Oklahoma who gave his life in Guatemala, standing with his people to the end.

These stories move me deeply. The saints are not perfect people; they are faithful ones. Each one shows a different face of holiness. Some are bold, others quiet. Some lived in cloisters, others in villages or city streets. Their personalities are as diverse as humanity itself, and still, each found a way to love God with their whole heart.

Hebrews reminds us that we are “surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses.” I believe that cloud is real. These saints who have gone before us continue to surround us—not just with inspiration, but with love. In the mystery of the communion of saints, I believe they pray with us and for us. When I feel weary or uncertain, I imagine them beside me, lifting my name to God, cheering me on in faith.

As an Episcopalian, I treasure the saints not only as examples but as companions. They remind me that the path to God is not one size fits all. And that gives me hope.
